Local Healthcare Social Service

To better understand the current healthcare system in Indonesia, a SEEDS consultant engaged with a local Master Program in one of the public universities in East Indonesia that majors in public health. There was one social program given by this University to one coastal area about three hours’ drive from the University in the same province.

The program aims at educating the public there, with healthcare information in different locations, such as in the public community healthcare centre, the religious centre, the tourist site, etc. During the event, the university students with healthcare majors provided healthcare education and health screening to the village members with help from the lecturers. There are simple tools for the public to access basic understanding of certain health topics, and visual aids to assist the students to explain the health information to them.

One of the topics is about the contagious diseases caused by mosquitoes, which are very common in this tropical weather, and to educate the public about what kind of diseases could be spread by mosquitos and how to recognize them, and avoid mosquito bites.

Throughout this experience, the SEEDS consultant believed that simple education can empower the locals to live healthily. This kind of collaboration with the local educational institute can be a viable way to bring in sustainable changes in remote and underprivileged areas.
