Indonesia has a thriving university education scene, with millions of young people choosing to attend a wide range of courses across the country every year. The skills and expertise that they gain during their studies directly influence progress and increasing prosperity.

Opportunities to teach at universities provide a direct contribution to the future generation of business and political leaders. SEEDS is able to place experienced international lecturers from a variety of disciplines in universities, and has already started with one secondment in Sulawesi.

Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai

Universitas Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai, known as Pahlawan University, is a private research university in Riau Province, Indonesia. The institution is allied with more than twenty overseas and domestic universities, cultivating an international reputation for high-quality programs in health sciences, education, law and social work, business and economics, engineering, and agriculture and animal husbandry.

SEEDS has partnered with Pahlawan University to bring a Registered Respiratory Therapist and bioethicist from the United States as an education consultant for two years. He will co-lecture in the nursing program on respiratory topics and support a continuous improvement project for academic English among faculty and students. As he assists researchers proofreading manuscripts for international publication, and aids students and educators in applying for international fellowships and residencies, the SEEDS education consultant endeavors to further advance the university’s ascendant rankings, prestige, and visibility.

This collaborative effort represents SEEDS’ investment in the people of Riau through educational development. It is where SEEDS’ vision for Southeast Asia synergizes with Pahlawan University’s own—raising independent graduates who are armed with entrepreneurial skills, men and women well-equipped to give back to the surrounding socioeconomic community.

UIN-SUSKA Faculty of Science and Technology

The State Islamic University Sultan Syarif Kasim II (UIN-SUSKA) is a public educational institution located in Pekanbaru, Riau, on the western Indonesian island of Sumatra.  Their vision is to achieve a standard of excellence in the integration of science, technology, and the arts, along with religious and moral values, in the educational delivery process.  Following an initial partnership with UIN-SUSKA’s Faculty of Psychology to assist in the establishment of a bilingual track program, SEEDS’ education consultant has transferred to working with the Faculty of Science and Technology.  The consultant’s role is to provide training for the faculty’s lecturers and staff towards the improvement of their formal English so as to facilitate further academic advancement and professional development.

In order for a program to become internationally recognized its lecturers are required to demonstrate their proficiency in their field at an international level, whether through the publishing of journal articles, presenting at international conferences, or obtaining higher education from other internationally recognized institutions.  For each of these activities, English is the de facto medium of communication. SEEDS’ partnership with this university will support them to achieve these goals.

UNHAS Faculty of Engineering

Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) is considered the leading state university in the eastern part of Indonesia. It is striving to become a university of international standard, committed to science and technology; arts and culture; and human resources that will bring development and welfare to the Indonesian people.

A SEEDS member has been seconded to the Faculty of Engineering where they will set up a study program and related laboratory facilities in the field of Integrated Chip Technologies and VLSI System Design. Currently many technologies that are needed to address Indonesia’s socio-economic challenges are imported from industrial countries.

The development of expertise in the field of VLSI Design Systems will allow Indonesian engineers to creatively develop effective and sustainable implementation technologies without the use of outside high-cost resources.

Bung Hatta University, Padang, Indonesia

Bung Hatta University (UBH), a private university located in West Sumatra, Indonesia, has a strong commitment to building a friendly academic environment to produce qualified intellectuals who show honesty, discipline, and integrity. The mission of UBH is the implementation of quality education and research in a democratic climate through upholding academic freedom and applying science, technology, art, and culture with the aim to improve the welfare of the society.

A SEEDS representative is helping students at UBH to improve their English fluency in the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education and the Faculty of Humanities. Many of the students plan to teach English or work in the travel or hospitality industries. Having a native English speaker on campus is a great benefit to them. Our representative also seeks to improve student education in the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Studies through her background and experience in marine biology and aquaculture. One of the goals in this department is to publish their research in English language journals and the SEEDS member is able to assist them in this goal.
