Although Bangkok is a developed city with good health, education, and community services, there are still many neighborhoods and families in need. In particular, many local leaders see substance abuse as one of the biggest problems that must be addressed in order for young people to be ready to face the plethora of changes the modern world has brought to Southeast Asia.
SEEDS members have spent many hours interviewing local leaders, parents, and youth about drug abuse. They found that some of the reasons children in Bangkok become addicted to drugs include lack of self-confidence, boredom, and desire to belong. In most homes, since both parents work long hours outside the home, children are left at home under the supervision of an older relative. Children over age 10 are normally released to play outside the home without supervision. This lack of supervision and structured activities compounded by lack of self-confidence creates fertile ground for negative influences to take root in the lives of these young people.
SEEDS has worked alongside local leaders to develop a Futsal training program to address some of these needs. The core of this project is focused at the neighborhood level. Adult coaches are positive role models who care about the young people and challenge them toward healthy living.
SEEDS also continues to develop a local futsal league to provide opportunity for each neighborhood team to compete with other teams close to home, and every year SEEDS runs a futsal tournament that provides exciting competition, the opportunity to play on a competition-level field, and to win trophies and futsal equipment for their own team.
